Denver-based Mincom announced in May that, unsurprisingly, safety remains the highest priority for chief executives, reporting that 71 of its poll of 100 industry executives rated workplace safety as the most pressing business challenge.

The software company undertook the poll in the first of a series of research studies designed to gauge the perceptions of key stakeholders in the mining industry.

Other than safety, executives ranked improving performance (67%), managing capital projects (46%) and recruiting a skilled workforce (38%) has high priorities.

Environmental concerns also rated, with 37% of executives rating addressing environmental issues as the most pressing business concern.

Meanwhile, Anglo American has announced that it will make its award-winning safety risk management programme available across the industry in an effort to drive safety improvements.
The company said the programme was a critical element of its own safety improvement strategy and is helping to improve safety across its operations.

The programme was developed by Anglo American and the University of Queensland, and includes courses for senior executives and line managers.

Anglo’s chief executive Cynthia Carroll said: “I believe if the right approach to risk is taken and we learn from incidents, we can manage the risks our people face and mine injury-free”.
