Rio expands on driverless trucks

Rio Tinto is expanding its fleet of driverless trucks as part of its ‘Mine of the Future’ technology innovation programme.
The mining company has signed a deal to by 150 of the vehicles from Komatsu over the next four years, to be used at its Pilbara iron ore mines in Western Australia.
The trucks can be operated from a central hub in Perth, more than 1,500km from the mine site.
The programme “introduces next-generation technologies for mining operations with the aim of reducing costs, increasing efficiency and improving health, safety and environmental performance” Rio Tinto said.
The Komatsu Autonomous Haulage System is the world’s first commercial haulage system that is completely autonomous.
Rio Tinto is also trialling the used of automated drills as part of its Mine of the Future programme.
