Goldcorp Inc’s Marlin gold mine in Guatemala has become the first mine in Central America to be fully certified as compliant with the International Cyanide Management Code.

The code is a voluntary initiative to promote responsible management of cyanide use in gold mining. Companies that sign up to the code are independently audited to prove their compliance.

Marlin is Goldcorp’s third operation to become compliant with the code, following the El Sauzal mine in Mexico and the Marigold mine in Nevada, which was the first mine in the world to be fully certified under the code.

“Marlin’s certification highlights Goldcorp’s ongoing commitment to maintaining the highest possible standards of environmental stewardship,” chief executive Chuck Jeannes said.
