The world’s first lithium exchange-traded fund has been launched on the New York Stock Exchange. The ETF will provide investors access to a commodity that is a valuable component of renewable energy and 'green' technology.

The fund was launched by Global X Funds, which also has a suite of funds that incorporate Brazil, China and silver and copper companies.

The ETF tracks the Solactive Global Lithium Index, which is designed to reflect performance of the largest lithium-battery producing and mining and refining companies in the world, Global X said.

“The Global X Lithium ETF is an efficient way to invest in what we refer to as a ‘green’ commodity because of its direct correlation to the renewable energy market such as electric cars and energy storage,” said chief executive Bruno del Ama.
