Gold Fields Ltd has announced that it has become the first mining company to obtain accreditation for all its operations with the International Cyanide Management Code.
The Cyanide Code is a voluntary programme for the gold-mining industry to promote responsible use of cyanide in gold production, and reduce potential human health and environmental impacts resulting from the use of cyanide.
“All of the eligible Gold Fields mines are now accredited and seven of the eight have achieved full compliance,” Gold Fields chief executive Nick Holland said.
The Cyanide Code is an internationally recognised world standard for cyanide use in the mining industry, and signatories must be regularly audited for compliance with the results available publically.
In total, 21 gold mining companies are currently signatories of the code.
